Tour Highlight: Mountain Climbing

This tour will take you to the summit of Mount Bisoke and is a full-day excursion. For one to participate, he/she must be at least 15 years of age. Typically, the ascent takes around 3 hours with another 2 hours to descend. Mount Bisoke is a dormant volcano in the Virunga Mountains reaching to 3,711m, with a pretty crater lake at the top. It straddles the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo and is one of eight prominent peaks in the area with fabulous views.

We shall start our tour at 7.00am at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters, where we are assigned our today’s guide before a half-hour drive to the start point for your trek. Our elevation is estimated to be 2,700m. This trek can be quite strenuous and requires a good level of physical fitness as we shall be  trekking at high altitude, steep slopes and rough terrain.

As we ascend, we will be trekking through a number of different vegetation zones. On the lower slopes we will pass through bamboo forest which is a preferred food for the golden monkeys and mountain gorillas. As we climb up to the higher slopes, we will come to a band of Hagenia forest. After about 3 hours, this Hagenia forest opens out to Lobelia bush as you approach the summit. We will be able to see many birds on the slopes of Mt Bisoke.
The summit is dominated by a large crater lake, and on a clear day we are able to have views of distant scenes. We shall relax and enjoy our lunch here as we listen to the entertainment of the birds. After descending the mountain, you shall proceed to re-join your vehicle and drive back to Kigali
